Joe Close Up

I haven't seen the sun for days!

Hi All,

We took this photo of me at least 3 weeks ago when I said, “Yeah, let’s write posts about ourselves!” and then bugged the intern’s get their posts in. Now look who’s been slacking off.  Not really, it’s been pretty busy around here!

As GetOutChicago’s resident webmaster/tweeter/marketeer/coffee drinker I’ve been busy helping keeping this site moving and our game plan on track. In my off time, I soak up everything theatre related (Illinois State University School of Theatre, represent!), rearrange the furniture in my new apartment, and attend Chicago Fire games (hint: there are discount tix out there).

That’s all for me right now…be sure to check out my posts under the ‘joeythespark’ handle (more coming soon) and keep on checking back for more sweet deals and events!

Georgie H.

I might be youngest intern of the bunch, but age can be deceiving.

While attending Walter Payton College Prep in downtown Chicago, my interest in the arts of Africa has grown enormously. During my sophomore year at Payton, I have learned some Zulu, the language of South Africa, and Muntu drumming, a style originating in west Africa. I have also been involved in rallies, taking a stand on issues such as blood diamonds and child soldiers that are present in Africa today. I am looking to continue my African studies on a trip abroad to Ghana in the spring of 2010. You can find me listening to some Animal Collective, Cool Kids, or Vampire Weekend, participating on Payton’s Model UN team, or studying the languages I am currently learning, which include French, Chinese, and of course, Zulu.

I may not be the greatest artist or performer (I trip on my own feet, my paper maché looks like a mound of glue, I always sing flat, and have been told my self portrait looked like a drowning mermaid), but interning at Carol Fox & Associates will hopefully give me the artistic edge I’ve never had.

Look for posts from me, known as theminiintern. I cannot wait to expose you to everything CF&A has for you, from horses to acrobats, million-dollar art to folk music, and blue men to the can-can. Stay tuned for the Jazz Dance World Festival, which features Muntu drumming! I could just make a surprise appearance…

So strap on your backpack and get out to Chicago!

Goodbye!   Au revoir!   再见!   Hamba kahle!

Adina, another intern, in her office space

Adina L.

Hi all,

I’m an intern too. But I’m cool. I promise. Growing up right around the corner from Blue Man Group, I’m a Chicago city-girl. Straight-up. While in high school at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, my twinkle toes and I danced pre-professionally for the Civic Ballet of Chicago. Then I honed on my more academic roots. Nowadays during the school-year, you can find me nestled at Columbia University in the City of New York, with my head in some Plato or Machiavelli book… or escaping campus for some exciting NYC art exhibit or Broadway show.

But this summer, I’m thrilled to be in my hometown interning at Carol Fox & Associates, who works with clients that first inspired me to dance and get into the performing arts. No, I don’t work in the supply closet… I have a little nook in the corner where I get the opportunity to work on a plethora of different projects – all over the place – which is great because I’m 19, and let’s face it, I’m not ready to settle down. I’m in the action and psyched to show you all of the awesome things for you to get out and do in Chicago! Stay tuned for my updates and fun posts as allovertheplaceintern, like this fun Single Ladies video Lucky Plush productions put together for StealThisDance.com – a celebration of the history of dance.

“Put your hands up” and get excited for what Chicago has in store for you!

Hello, Everyone!

You may know me as justtheintern, and well, that I am.  But don’t get me wrong, I’m not a coffee-fetcher, and there’s more to me than just free labor.  I’m a Manhattan native, University of Wisconsin-Madison alum.  I moved to Chicago last August to pursue my Masters in New Arts Journalism at the School of the Art Institute, and to learn what it’s like to live in the tundra–just kidding…kinda.

Now that I’m working at Carol Fox & Associates for the summer, I have a great opportunity to learn a wealth of information about the company’s shows and events happening in the upcoming (warm) summer months.  Although today’s only my third day on the job, I’ll be sure to keep myself–and you, of course–filled in on the details of what I’m working on, including Cirque Shanghai Bright Spirit, an incredible show featuring world-renowned acrobats from China!  Stayed tuned to learn more about other exciting shows and events coming up this summer!

Until next time,

Elise

GetOutChicago! needs an official logo and we want you to design it!

We’re sponsoring a supercool, uber-insider opportunity for up ‘n coming graphic designers looking to expand their professional freelance network.  Design us your best logo, submit it by April 30, 2009, and if we choose it, your design becomes the official GetOutChicago! logo for our wordpress website.

Plus, we’re offering a $500 cash prize to the winner!

If you are a student designer, looking for a professional credit to add to your portfolio as well as the chance to network with one of Chicago’s top PR and marketing agencies, we especially welcome your submissions!

Here are our fast and furious GetOutChicago! logo contest rules:

1. All logo submissions must be 904 x 160 pixels, and emailed to getoutlogo@gmail.com before midnight, April 30, 2009. This is really the only rule we’re sticklers about…

2. The words “GetOutChicago!” must appear in the logo — in any shape, font, format or style that you choose. Exclamation point is optional.

3. Feel free to include our slogan in your design: Get In by Getting Out.  Otherwise, forgettaboutit.

4. Sky’s the limit on color schemes – EXCEPT for black & red.  No black & red combos.  Seriously, no.  It’s so 80s.  Also, color scheme of logo submissions do NOT need to match this generic wordpress template.  No really…they don’t.

5. No limit on number of contest submissions per graphic designer, but we recommend sending only three attachments per email.  All submissions must be sent via email to getoutlogo@gmail.com

6. This is a contest, so if you bend the rules a little, you might actually win.  Plus, we’re creative types.  Bending the rules is how we get ahead in life.

7. Carol Fox, President of Carol Fox & Associates, will be the final judge of the official logo contest.  In case you don’t know, some of CF&A’s clients include Blue Man Group, Madison Square Garden’s Radio City Rockettes, Cirque Shanghai, Cirque du Soleil, Auditorium Theatre, School of the Art Institute, Centre East, and on, and on, and on…  Seriously, she’s knows everyone in Chicago, so if you win, you’re going to instantly make some well-connected friends.

8. In case you’re wondering about Ms. Fox’s sensibilities, she likes vintage posters, mid-century modern furniture, black & white photography, Urban Outfitters, and the TV show, Entourage.  In other words: surprise her.

9. While we truly hope to find the perfect new logo as well as meet a few new talented designers through our contest, we reserve the right not to name an official contest winner if we feel that none of the logo submissions are quite right for us.

10. Any Q’s.  Send ‘em to getoutlogo@gmail.com  We’ll try to answer as many as possible, and offer feedback if requested.
